Star ex-Goldman Sachs trader retires aged 33 following eight year hedge fund career
It is not easy to retire young in 2026. It is not impossible.
Stanley Sheriff, a former star Goldman Sachs junior macro trader who left for the buy-side in 2018, is understood to have retired from Balyasny Asset Management aged 33.
Neither Sheriff not Balyasny responded to a request to comment.
Sheriff joined Balyasny in Dubai in May 2025. His move to the US fund caused excitement because Sheriff had only just joined Taula Asset Management, where he worked for less than a month before Balyasny poached him.
Sheriff's intentions are unclear but he is not thought to be seeking a new role and to be spending some time relaxing. Maybe he will reappear.
Sheriff spent four years at Goldman Sachs from 2014 after graduating with a first class degree from the London School of Economics.
His departure from Balyasny follows various other exits from the firm. As we were first to report last week, Millennium rehired James Watson, who was running a 20 person pod in London. Ex-Goldman Sachs traders Aditya Singh and George Tyrrell left too. The FCA Register also shows ex-Symmetry portfolio manager Peter Blandford leaving on October 9th.
