A Deutsche Bank FX trader who left his job 2 years ago, reappeared

Andrew Bown is back. Two years ago, he left his job at Deutsche Bank on December 9th 2022. Now he's resurfaced at Wells Fargo in London instead. The FCA register says he joined on December 2nd.

Bown is an FX options trader. He spent nearly 13 years at Deutsche Bank and was at Barclays for nearly four years before that.

It's not clear what Bown did during his two-year break. He didn't respond to a request for enlightenment. He is not to be confused with Andrew Bown, the keyboard player and guitarist in the band Status Quo.

Wells Fargo didn't respond to a request to comment on Bown's arrival. The US bank's international markets business is run Jim O'Neill, a former Barclays managing director who might possibly remember Bown from the London office in Bown's pre-Deutsche days. Equally, though, Wells Fargo hired Enrique Payan from Deutsche Bank as global head of FX options in January 2024. Payan was likely to have been Bown's route in. Wells Fargo also hired Eddy Sfeir, another ex-Deutsche Bank FX trader in July.

It's not unusual for banks to hire people who are out of the market at this time of the year. Doing so avoids the need to buy out bonuses for the previous 12 months. Bown is understood to have been well-liked at Deutsche and Payan was presumably among his admirers.

Deutsche Bank's FX team has suffered various exits this year following a shakeup under new heads Sameen Farooqui and Chris Leonard. Bown's tenure ended before the agitation, however.
