Research & Analytics Analyst/Associate - BlackRock Investment Stewardship (BIS)

About this role

BlackRock Investment Stewardship (BIS) is a 45+ member global team operating in five offices across three regions - the Americas (New York, San Francisco); Europe, Middle East and Africa (London); and Asia-Pacific (Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Sydney) - and undertakes engagement with and proxy voting at portfolio companies on behalf of clients globally.

BIS is looking for a Research and Analytics Analyst/Associate to provide data and analytical support to the global BIS community and other stakeholders across the firm for any activities related to BIS' core activities of proxy voting, company engagements and thought leadership.  

S/he will be responsible for helping to build and support a global, data-centric research capability to complement the fundamental, more qualitative company-specific research conducted by BIS voting analysts. A key focus area of BIS is on sustainability-related issues and the candidate will use large data sets to help link our investment convictions to KPIs and demonstrate the impact of our engagement and voting on long term value creation by portfolio companies. In this role, the candidate will also support, expand and maintain various tools, scripts and processes in support of BIS' core activities.

The successful candidate will possess a passion for creative and critical thinking about the stewardship ecosystem, technology, ESG-oriented data analysis, as well as desire to partner closely with stewardship as well as with key business partners across the firm.  


  • Develop and write queries to analyze data, perform trend analysis and identify data discrepancies for internal BIS team, business partners across the firm and for clients

  • Aid in design and development of reports, presentations and visual aids

  • Integrate data from multiple systems and develop analytics on voting, company engagements, and client inquiries

  • Run reconciliations to ensure data integrity across multiple systems

  • Analyze large datasets and turn analyses into insights (i.e. tell the story with data), investigate and resolve complex and intricate issues while meeting tight deadlines

  • Provide high quality client service to all stakeholders: Address inquiries, perform controls, and resolve problems

  • Learn and be able to teach colleagues about the intricacies and interconnectivities of the Aladdin® end to end investment platform, including front-end tools that can be leveraged to access data as well as the vast underlying database structure that stores critical information such as portfolio holdings, security details, client attributes including proxy voting flags and AUM

  • Develop expertise in third party ISS ProxyExchange platform and how it interfaces with Aladdin and other external parties

  • Initiate and drive platform and process innovations to better support internal management reports and client requests, creating standard automated reports and working closely with other analytical functions across BlackRock Solutions, the Aladdin Product Group and BlackRock Sustainable Investing to spec and build solutions


  • Bachelor's Degree is required, with preference to business disciplines such as Finance, Accounting, or Economics, and technical disciplines such as Computer Science, Information Systems, or Engineering

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a highly analytical, data and/or engineering role

  • Excellent analytical skills with very strong attention to detail

  • Experience in data consolidation and creating detailed reports, charts and tables

  • Ability to effectively address issues in collaboration with others as appropriate; ability to proactively anticipate problems and opportunities and confidence to use initiative to pursue solutions

  • Extensive knowledge of Excel and strong knowledge of the entire MS Office suite

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills combined with agile critical thinking and a problem solving mindset, with the ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical personnel

  • Ability to manage complex work within tight deadlines

  • A "Student of the Markets" mentality: Intellectually curious with a passion for learning about the global financial markets and the investment management business

  • Natural team player able to work in an innovative, entrepreneurial, and fast paced environment and leverage technology to solve complex problems

  • Working knowledge and experience with relational databases and Sybase SQL

  • Working knowledge of scripting and programming languages eg. R, Python, SAS, VBA, or Python 

  • Demonstrable desire to expand technical expertise

  • Passion for markets, basic knowledge of asset management industry, familiarity with buy-side investment and risk management workflows is a plus

  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to lead multiple projects

  • Experience with Aladdin platform a very strong plus
