Organisational Context

The Integrated Services Division (ISD) within the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) centralises the specialised support functions that provide cross-cutting support to the Office. The Division is headed by a Director who is responsible for managing the reliable and cost-effective delivery of integrated services and ensuring that the OTP is adequately supported through all relevant service functions, technologies and equipment, and that appropriate services are available to allow the implementation of the Office's mandate. The services include information knowledge and evidence management, forensic science, language services, tracking and information fusion. The Division works to develop new approaches and strategies that promote the use of modern tools and advanced technology as mechanisms to strengthen the effectiveness of the Office.

The Language Services Unit (LSU) forms part of the Integrated Services Division (ISD) providing critical, close support functions to the Office of the Prosecutor in order to fulfil its mandate. In this respect, during the preliminary examination, investigation, and prosecution phases, the Unit provides field, event and remote interpretation; transcription of audio and video material; translation of OTP evidence and core Office documentation; as well as other services requiring language expertise, such as summary translation, redacting, and editing.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent of the post will work in the Language Services Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor under the overall supervision of the Language Coordinator and will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Translate and self-revise documents from Hebrew into English. Such documents may cover a wide range of topics including, but not limited to, legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial matters;
  • Proofread and cross-read the work of other translators;
  • Contribute to terminology and reference databases;
  • Perform other tasks as required (e.g. transcribing a/v material, and/or IT related tasks).

Essential Qualifications

Education:

Advanced university degree in translation, interpretation, linguistics, law or any other related field, is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience is accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree;

Experience:

A minimum of 5 years (7 years with a first-level university degree) of work experience in translation, interpretation, linguistics or law preferably in an international organisation, is required;

Some specialisation in topics dealt with by the Court, e.g. legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial will be considered an asset.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Excellent eye for detail, accuracy, style and usage;
  • Sound knowledge of relevant computer software, specifically CAT (such as memoQ) & MT tools, office suites, and electronic document management systems.
  • Proven ability and flexibility in working to deadlines effectively under pressure with evolving tasks and priorities;
  • Ability to work effectively and constructively as part of a multidisciplinary and multicultural team;
  • Ability to keep strict standards of confidentiality;
  • Openness to skills development.

Knowledge of languages:

Mother-tongue (or equivalent) proficiency in English and a high-level of proficiency in Hebrew are required. Knowledge of the other working language of the Court, French, is desirable. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish) and one or more of the Court's situation-related languages (such as Ukrainian, Rohingya, Cebuano, Tagalog, Burmese, Dari, Pashto, and Swahili.) will be considered an asset.

General Information

- Candidates appointed to posts at a P-5 grade or in the Director category are subject to a maximum aggregate length of service of seven years. This is pursuant to a decision of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP Resolution ICC-ASP/23/Res.2 - ICC-ASP-23-Res.2-ENG) to implement a tenure policy at the Court as of 1 January 2025.

- The selected candidate will be subject to a Personnel Security Clearance (PSC) process in accordance with ICC policy. The PSC process will include but will not be limited to, verification of the information provided in the personal history form and a criminal record check.

- Post to be filled by a national of a State Party to the ICC Statute, or of a State which has signed and is engaged in the ratification process or which is engaged in the accession process. This is pursuant to a decision of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP Resolution ICC-ASP/23/Res.3 - ICC-ASP-23-Res.3-ENG) to introduce a moratorium on the recruitment by the ICC of staff of non-States Parties' nationality.

- In accordance with the Rome Statute, the ICC aims to achieve fair representation of women and men for all positions, representation of the principal legal systems of the world for legal positions, and equitable geographical representation for positions in the professional category.
