The Enterprise Technology Services organization partners with every part of the American Express business to power the company's growth and innovation with trust and efficiency and drive competitive differentiation with speed. We support the delivery and operations of technology, digital, and data capabilities, platforms, and services globally. Specifically, our team is responsible for the company's technology engineering, architecture, and infrastructure, providing 24x7 support to ensure an uninterrupted, high-quality experience for customers and colleagues. We also provide product management for core enterprise platforms, and lead technology risk and information security, enterprise data governance and platforms, digital product and design, and enterprise AI platforms on behalf of the company.

The Cyber Engineering team at American Express is seeking a dynamic engineer for the role of Backend developer within the Information Security organization. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop advanced capabilities involving emerging technologies including Gen AI. As a key member of this team, you will have the opportunity to design and develop cutting-edge product capabilities utilizing emerging technologies, including Generative AI, to stay ahead of the evolving cyber threat landscape and protect American Express's digital assets.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

• Collaborate with product managers, senior engineers, and cross-functional teams to design, develop, and deliver scalable, secure, and high-performance backend applications.
• Design, develop, and deploy backend applications using modern frameworks and best practices with a strong emphasis on performance, scalability, and maintainability.
• Build and integrate AI-powered solutions using Generative AI services.
• Design and implement agentic AI workflows using frameworks such as LangGraph and workflow orchestration platforms such as Temporal to build intelligent, resilient, and scalable applications.
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent coding agents to improve engineering productivity while maintaining high standards for code quality and security.
• Write clean, reusable, well-tested code; develop automated unit and integration tests; and actively participate in architecture discussions and peer code reviews.
• Build, deploy, and operate applications on cloud-native platforms using containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps best practices.
• Continuously optimize application performance, reliability, scalability, and observability while staying current with emerging technologies and AI advancements.
• Manage your own time effectively, prioritize tasks, and work independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines.
• Stay up-to-date with emerging standards and best practices and promote standard methodologies and consistent framework usage.

Qualifications

• Associates or BS degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field (or equivalent work experience)
• 3+ years of hands-on software development experience building scalable, cloud-native applications.
• Strong experience developing backend applications and distributed systems using Python, Node.js (JavaScript/TypeScript), and Go (Golang). Experience with Java is a plus.
• Experience designing and building RESTful APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, and high-performance backend systems using modern software engineering best practices.
• Hands-on experience developing AI-powered applications using Generative AI technologies.
• Experience productizing AI solutions by integrating AI into production applications through intuitive user interfaces, APIs, intelligent workflows, and agentic architectures.
• Working knowledge of Agentic AI frameworks and orchestration platforms such as LangGraph, LangChain, MCP (Model Context Protocol), and Temporal or similar workflow engines.
• Proficiency with AI-assisted software development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini Code Assist, or similar coding agents, with the ability to effectively validate AI-generated code for quality, security, and maintainability.
• Experience with frontend technologies such as React and Next.js for building and integrating AI-enabled user experiences is preferred.
• Strong experience with containerization and cloud-native technologies, including Docker, Kubernetes, infrastructure automation, observability, and modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitLab CI, or equivalent).
• Experience writing automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests along with proficiency in Git-based collaborative development workflows.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced Agile environment, manage multiple priorities, and drive innovation through continuous learning and collaboration.
